Norman Wilder Forest

The Work Begins
August 2023
Since 2010, a group of dedicated volunteers have been working to remove Kudzu and other invasive plants from Norman Wilder Forest. Working in coordination with Conserving Carolina and AmeriCorps staff; this group of volunteers referred to as “Kudzu Warriors” have made enormous progress. Starting in 2021, PCAC has provided grants to fund this work. Significant portions of the Forest are now free of Kudzu and native plants can flourish.

One of the delightful surprises was the return of the native plant Fern Leaf Phacelia which blooms in the spring. The return of Phacelia was first observed in a wooded area populated by locust trees. The photos show the return of an enormous bloom of Phalicia to an open hillside. Once the Kudzu was killed, seeds from the Phacelia, long dormant under a blanket of Kudzu, were able to create a spectacular bloom.
Vigilance is needed to keep the Kudzu from returning. Every Monday morning, the Kudzu Warriors continue to work in Norman Wilder Forest removing invasive plants.
