Nina Simone Mural

Traveling down, on 176 you’ll see the Tryon Food and Fuel convenience store on your right. On the back side of that building is a mural that’s another tribute to Tryon native Nina Simone. It was painted in 2020 by Chapel Hill artist Scott Nurkin and depicts Simone looking skyward with a floral backdrop. Nurkin founded the North Carolina Musician Murals Project that honors the great musicians of the state by painting murals of them in their hometowns. This mural of Simone is one of more than 20 murals Nurkin has painted since founding the project in 2019.
