SALUDA

Saluda, North Carolina, is a charming small town (population 673) nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, known for its rich railroad history, outdoor adventures, and artistic community.

Saluda gained prominence as the site of the Saluda Grade, the steepest main line standard-gauge railway in the U.S. until 2001. This engineering marvel, built with convict labor, dropped 600 feet to the mile with 50 curves, significantly shaping the town. Incorporated in 1881, Saluda quickly became a popular summer retreat. The Saluda Historic Depot and Museum preserves this important railroad heritage.

Saluda's historic Main Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, featuring century-old establishments like Thompson's Store and Ward's Grill (the oldest general store in NC). It's a great place for a leisurely stroll, Browse unique shops, and dining in local restaurants.
